In a bid to address the growing need for sustainable last-mile deliveries, logistics providers worldwide are increasingly exploring cost-effective solutions. One promising trend gaining traction is the adoption of mixed electric fleets, which includes incorporating e-cargo bikes.
According to Jennifer Dungs, Global Head of Mobility at EIT InnoEnergy, logistics providers are facing multiple challenges, including rising parcel volumes and stricter city regulations. By embracing eco-friendly transportation modes like e-cargo bikes, companies can not only realize significant cost savings but also make substantial emissions reductions, benefiting both operators and urban environments.
A recent study conducted by EIT InnoEnergy highlights the potential cost savings of using a combination of e-cargo bikes and e-vans in urban logistics operations. Compared to relying solely on e-van fleets, the study found that integrating e-cargo bikes could lead to significant annual savings for logistics companies delivering billions of parcels each year.
Moreover, the introduction of e-cargo bikes into delivery fleets offers additional benefits beyond cost savings. By promoting the use of mixed fleets, cities can reduce CO2 emissions, congestion, and competition for space, thereby enhancing overall quality of life.
However, the study also acknowledges the hidden costs and complexities associated with implementing mixed fleet models. These include establishing Micro Fulfilment Centres (MFCs) for e-cargo bike delivery and increased personnel costs for parcel sorting and delivery. Despite these challenges, the overall cost savings and environmental benefits make the transition to mixed electric fleets a compelling option for logistics companies.
The findings of the study underscore the importance of collaboration between logistics companies, cities, vehicle manufacturers, and financial institutions to drive sustainable last-mile logistics. By working together, stakeholders can optimize infrastructure planning and realize the full benefits of eco-friendly transportation solutions.
