Dubai South, a prominent hub for aviation, logistics, and real estate development, has successfully completed the first phase of autonomous vehicle trials in collaboration with a logistics technology partner. These trials, conducted within the Dubai South Logistics District, aimed to validate the performance and reliability of an unmanned electric truck designed for industrial logistics.
The trials rigorously tested the vehicle’s autonomous navigation capabilities on predefined routes within a controlled environment. Evaluations included object detection, accident prevention, and maneuvers in mixed traffic scenarios involving vehicles, trucks, and pedestrians. The tests also assessed the vehicle’s autopilot system for essential maneuvers such as parking and emergency stops, achieving successful outcomes without incident.
Mohsen Ahmad, CEO of the Logistics District – Dubai South, highlighted the trials’ importance in advancing Dubai’s vision as a global logistics hub. He emphasized their role in enhancing operational efficiency and promoting sustainability within the regional logistics sector, aligning with Dubai’s ambitious goals for autonomous transportation and reduced environmental impact.
The initiative forms part of Dubai’s strategy to transition 25% of its transportation sector to autonomous vehicles by 2030, projected to generate substantial economic benefits across various sectors, amounting to AED 22 billion annually.
Established in 2006 as a significant government initiative, Dubai South spans 145 square kilometers and serves as a catalyst for Dubai’s economic and social development. It offers a conducive business environment with free-zone advantages and diverse residential communities, positioning itself as a pivotal player in the region’s commercial landscape.
