Da Nang recently hosted a significant meeting focused on enhancing “ASEAN-China Cooperation on Industrial and Supply Chains,” addressing evolving global trade dynamics. Participants convened to analyze emerging trends in industrial and supply chains, discussing the mutual opportunities and challenges faced by ASEAN and China. Recommendations were put forth to deepen collaboration between the regions. Dr. Vu Le Thai Hoang, Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies at the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, underscored ASEAN’s pivotal role as China’s largest trading partner since 2020. Despite challenges such as global economic fragmentation, climate change threats, and technological advancements like AI, ASEAN and China are poised to leverage their strengths in manufacturing, technology, and human capital.
Vietnam, in particular, aims to attract sustainable foreign direct investment (FDI) and advance high-tech projects. Dr. Vu Le Thai Hoang emphasized Vietnam’s strategy to transform Da Nang and other coastal cities into crucial transshipment hubs within the ASEAN-China supply chain network. Vice Chairman Ho Ky Minh of the Da Nang People’s Committee highlighted the city’s proactive policies aimed at solidifying its role in Southeast Asian and Chinese supply chains. Priority sectors include IT, electronics, telecommunications, semiconductor manufacturing, and AI applications. Da Nang’s efforts to develop Lien Chieu Port into a gateway for logistics supply chains across ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific region are pivotal to its strategic goals.
Da Nang’s establishment as Vietnam’s first locality with a Free Trade Zone underscores its commitment to fostering investment, trade, and logistical excellence. Minh emphasized that these initiatives are critical in elevating Da Nang’s status as a key socio-economic center in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. The meeting provided a forum for scholars to exchange insights and propose strategies to enhance supply chain participation, improve production efficiency, and stimulate consumption. Da Nang anticipates increased interest from partners and businesses keen on exploring investment and collaboration opportunities in the region.
