A significant development has emerged in the UK freight industry with the appointment of Sam Warren as the inaugural chair of the Sustainable Logistics Policy Group by the British International Freight Association (BIFA). Warren, currently serving as a sustainability manager at a leading Essex-based freight forwarder, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role.
Having previously held positions such as environmental and sustainability officer for Chelmsford City Council, Warren is well-equipped to tackle environmental challenges within the sector. His appointment underscores BIFA’s commitment to addressing pressing environmental issues in freight and logistics operations.
Established in 2023, the Policy Group aims to identify and confront current and future environmental concerns affecting the operations of BIFA’s members. Warren’s election as chair follows discussions at the group’s recent meeting in March, where various sustainable goals and policies were deliberated.
Among the topics discussed were two significant EU measures: the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) for shipping. These measures highlight the increasing importance of sustainability within the industry and the imperative for proactive engagement.
Steve Parker, Director General of BIFA, emphasized the diverse stages of development among BIFA members regarding environmental and sustainability policy. He underscored Warren’s pivotal role in leading the Policy Group to shape best practices and advocate for members’ interests in engagements with government and other stakeholders.
Warren expressed his eagerness for the opportunity, acknowledging the evolving nature of environmental concerns within freight and logistics. While carbon emissions often take precedence, he stressed the broader spectrum of sustainability issues that require attention.
As the inaugural chair of the Sustainable Logistics Policy Group, Warren is poised to spearhead initiatives promoting environmental responsibility and sustainability within the freight industry.
