Taiwan is considering forging cross-industry alliances to take the lead in reshaping global supply chains following recent geopolitical shifts, according to Secretary-General to the President Lin Chia-lung. Speaking at a forum in Taipei on Tuesday, Lin emphasized the potential for Taiwan to play a pivotal role in this transformation.
Addressing the forum, which focused on strategies for companies to expand internationally, Lin highlighted the importance of industrial innovation, including initiatives in smart manufacturing, Internet of Things (IoT), and precision health. He encouraged Taiwanese enterprises to explore global markets through collaborative efforts spanning multiple industries.
Lin expressed the hope that Taiwan’s involvement in restructuring supply chains would extend beyond a mere “Taiwan plus one” approach, emphasizing the need for “Taiwan plus N” strategies to unlock opportunities across various countries. This approach aims to position Taiwanese companies as pioneers in the evolving global supply chain landscape.
The government’s promotion of six core strategic industries aligns with Taiwan’s broader foreign policy objectives, including the New Southbound Policy and enhanced relations with Indo-Pacific countries, the United States, Japan, and central and Eastern Europe.
In urging Taiwanese companies to move beyond their traditional roles in the supply chain, Lin emphasized the importance of leveraging cross-industry innovation to enhance Taiwan’s competitiveness. He cited examples such as collaborations in smart transportation systems and healthcare solutions in Thailand, showcasing Taiwan’s expertise in both software and hardware integration.
Lin underscored the potential for Taiwan to lead in emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, drones, and smart city solutions through coordinated efforts across industries. By forming “national teams” comprising diverse stakeholders, Taiwan aims to capitalize on its strengths to drive innovation and secure a prominent position in future supply chain networks.
