Japan’s logistics sector is adapting to new demands as major parcel delivery services expand drop-off options to tackle logistical challenges in 2024. This initiative aims to relieve pressure on delivery personnel facing stricter overtime regulations implemented since April, among other industry changes. Announced recently, a leading delivery service will now offer Smart Club members the flexibility to choose convenient drop-off locations for Hikyaku Express, Hikyaku Large Size Express, and Hikyaku Air Express parcels. These locations include front doors, parcel boxes, garages, and designated spots.
Another major player in the market introduced similar drop-off choices last month for its primary delivery services. Since March 2019, a national postal service has been accepting pre-orders for drop-off deliveries.
The Ministry of Transport highlighted a record-breaking delivery of 5 billion parcels nationwide in fiscal 2022, driven by the surge in online shopping. However, the rate of redeliveries has climbed to approximately 10%, influenced by lifestyle changes such as an increase in dual-income households, placing additional strain on delivery services. “As the availability of delivery drivers declines, establishing efficient delivery systems becomes crucial,” emphasized a source in the logistics industry.
