In a significant move aimed at bolstering Hungary’s logistics infrastructure, the Science and Innovation, Technology, Industry, and Logistics Park Council has approved plans for a major expansion. Following the Council’s decision, three new rural industrial parks can now be established, complementing the existing 18 logistics parks. Additionally, four industrial parks have been granted approval for land expansion, as announced by the Ministry for National Economy.
The government’s steadfast support for investments in the logistics sector led to the establishment of a legal framework for logistics parks in 2023. The introduction of a new certification system seeks to streamline regulations, certifications, and monitoring processes, ensuring investments in the logistics service sector are conducted efficiently and within a coordinated framework. The Council will assess applications and propose the award of the title to eligible logistics parks, which can be classified as intermodal, regional, or local logistics parks.
Hungary boasts exceptional potential in freight transport, serving as a crucial entry point to the EU along three major road freight routes. The country’s extensive motorway network ensures accessibility from almost every corner of the nation, further enhancing its role in the logistics sector. Currently, the logistics industry serves as a cornerstone of economic growth in Hungary, with approximately 2,500 companies operating within the sector, employing 300,000 individuals and supporting around 100,000 families. Accounting for five percent of GDP, the government aims to double this contribution to reach 10 percent.
To capitalize on its growth potential and enhance competitiveness, Hungary aims to strengthen its investment and export-based economy. This involves developing infrastructure tailored to industrial companies, focusing on transport, haulage, warehousing, and associated services. With an additional 39 logistics centers eligible for the title of logistics park, Hungary now boasts a total of 57 officially recognized logistics parks. The Ministry anticipates that the Council’s initiatives will significantly contribute to the development of industrial, logistics, and technology parks, thereby bolstering the economic performance and attractiveness of Hungarian regions.
