Significant advancement in Nigeria’s logistics sector, with the successful export of the country’s agricultural produce via rail, demonstrating the enhanced infrastructure resulting from China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The first shipment, comprising 18 containers transported by locomotive, departed from the Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano on July 7, 2024, and arrived at the Lagos Port Complex Apapa on July 17 after a 10-day journey. This achievement marks a vital step in optimizing Nigeria’s supply chain operations through rail transport.
Key officials from various organizations were present to receive the cargo in Lagos. A logistics expert emphasized that this successful transaction boosts investor confidence in Nigeria’s rail logistics system and called for the Federal Ministry of Transportation to expedite the standard gauge line. “The Belt and Road Initiative has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s prosperity by promoting logistics supply chain development. This initiative has facilitated the transfer of more goods from the hinterland to ports, leading to substantial infrastructural growth and increased connectivity across Nigeria and the African continent,” the expert stated.
Another industry leader underscored the importance of this accomplishment and called for increased collaboration to enhance efficiency and security within rail cargo movement. The leader pointed out that rail transport from the north would facilitate international trade for importers and exporters, diversify Nigeria’s economy, and generate foreign exchange through non-oil exports.
“This development is poised to transform Nigeria’s transportation landscape. Rail, as an environmentally friendly mode of transport, excels in efficiently moving large volumes of goods. It is ideal for transporting heavy and bulky loads over long distances, thereby enhancing supply chain planning and reducing costs,” the leader added.
