Scheduled for 21 to 24 May, the inaugural Global Supply Chain Forum aims to address the pressing need for more sustainable and resilient global production and distribution networks. Organized by a partnership between UNCTAD and Barbados, the forum seeks to tackle the complex challenges faced by supply chains worldwide.
With geopolitical tensions and climate change posing unprecedented strains on global supply chains, the forum will bring together government officials, business leaders, and experts from across the globe to craft solutions for greener, more efficient, and resilient supply chains. The COVID-19 pandemic, along with geopolitical shifts and rising maritime freight rates, has underscored the urgent need for collaborative efforts to strengthen supply chain resilience.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has played a significant role in supporting the forum through its ports authority, demonstrating a commitment to fostering international cooperation and enhancing global supply chain resilience.
Key issues to be addressed at the forum include disruptions in major trade routes, such as attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and turmoil in the Black Sea resulting from the war in Ukraine. Additionally, the impact of climate-related events, such as drought-induced water level reductions in the Panama Canal, will be discussed to identify strategies for mitigating supply chain disruptions.
The Global Supply Chain Forum aims to drive innovative solutions for building greener, more efficient, and resilient supply chains, with a focus on promoting shared development gains for vulnerable economies. Through collaborative efforts, including joint workshops, technical visits, and seminars, the partnership between UNCTAD and the Saudi Ports Authority has been instrumental in advancing discussions on shipping connectivity and maritime transport challenges.
As supply chains continue to face unprecedented challenges, the Global Supply Chain Forum serves as a platform for stakeholders to come together, exchange insights, and develop strategies to navigate the evolving global landscape.
