In a significant achievement for the logistics sector, a key player in the UAE has successfully transported over 700,000 tonnes of products in the first year of its partnership with the national rail network. This collaboration began in September 2023, marking a milestone in enhancing supply chain efficiency within the region.
Over 36,000 containers were efficiently transported from a rail freight terminal in Al Ruwais Industrial City to Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi. This innovative rail service, operated by a subsidiary of the national rail network, has reduced transit times dramatically, cutting travel from 12 hours to just four hours each way. This improvement not only offers higher cost efficiencies but also significantly lowers carbon emissions associated with product transport.
The rail solution represents a robust alternative to traditional road transport, offering enhanced resilience against weather conditions such as fog. The leadership of the logistics operator emphasized that using rail transport has unlocked new opportunities and strengthened the local supply chains. This mode of transport allows for larger volumes to be moved at greater speeds, providing a competitive edge in meeting customer demands.
The partnership also contributes positively to the local economy, with a substantial portion of the value generated flowing back into the community, thus supporting economic diversification and growth initiatives.
Looking ahead, the logistics partnership is set to expand its reach, with plans to transport products to additional ports within the UAE, including the Port of Fujairah. This aligns with the broader goals of the national rail network, which aims to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport by 21% annually by 2050 as part of the UAE’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
The focus on efficient and sustainable transportation solutions not only benefits businesses but also contributes to the region’s overall economic resilience and environmental sustainability.
