In a significant move aimed at enhancing nationwide delivery service accessibility, South Korea’s largest e-commerce enterprise has announced plans to invest over 3 trillion won ($2.2 billion) in expanding its logistics infrastructure by the end of 2026.
The investment will facilitate the extension of free, one-day delivery services, known as “rocket” delivery, to almost the entire country. Particularly, residents in rural areas, often underserved by traditional retail outlets, stand to benefit significantly from this expansion. By enabling online shopping with next-day delivery and no additional fees, the initiative aims to address the challenges faced by remote regions in accessing essential goods and services.
Moreover, the expansion is poised to spur economic growth in these areas by creating new employment opportunities, especially among young people. With the establishment of local logistics centers, the influx of jobs is expected to invigorate rural economies and mitigate population decline, a pressing issue driven by aging demographics and low birth rates.
The introduction of eight new fulfillment centers in strategic locations across coastal and mountainous regions underscores the commitment to overcoming logistical challenges associated with remote delivery. These centers, set to be operational in various provinces, will not only improve delivery efficiency but also serve as hubs for job creation within their respective communities.
The expansion initiative targets regions grappling with population decline, with a focus on areas designated as having the most severe demographic challenges in South Korea. By extending delivery coverage to these underserved regions, the initiative aims to uplift local communities and enhance overall quality of life.
The positive impact of similar initiatives in underserved areas is already evident, with previous deployments of rocket delivery services leading to a significant uptick in online orders and bolstering local economies. This expansion is poised to replicate and amplify these benefits, driving economic revitalization and fostering community development.
As remote rural areas transition from delivery “blind spots” to thriving economic hubs, the initiative is expected to contribute to the broader goal of inclusive economic growth. By addressing logistical challenges and expanding access to essential services, the initiative aligns with efforts to build resilient and sustainable communities nationwide in South Korea.
