Industry experts emphasize that logistics can significantly boost productivity across all regions and is crucial for driving economic growth. A key figure in the sector stated, “Logistics underpins all sectors of the economy, serving households, businesses, and public services daily. It is a major sector, employing 8% of the UK workforce. As such, logistics is ideally placed to help the new government revitalize the economy, provided its needs are integrated into the new industrial strategy.”
To ensure a successful start for the new administration and to give the economy a vital boost, it is essential for the government to support the logistics sector in driving the growth the country urgently requires. The logistics industry has outlined several priorities for the government to consider within its first 100 days. These include an industrial strategy that directly drives growth; innovative and integrated infrastructure to move goods productively, strategically, and sustainably; a fair transition to becoming a clean energy leader; skills partnerships to support a thriving sector; trade growth; and safe and efficient road freight.
The sector also advocates for appointing a dedicated minister for logistics and supply chain to facilitate effective decision-making. “Efficient, cost-effective logistics is critical to every part of the UK’s economy, and our sector is ready to partner with the new government to establish the infrastructure, decarbonization, skills, innovation, and trade policies needed to rebuild the country,” a leading industry representative remarked. “By involving our members in developing the planned industrial strategy and the government’s missions, we are confident that logistics can deliver productivity gains to supercharge the economy by up to £8 billion a year.”
