Japan is strengthening its commitment to economic sustainability and inclusive growth in the Philippines with a $4.7 million grant aimed at enhancing the fishery supply chain.
The initiative, formally signed in Mandaluyong City, will be implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR). The two-year project, set to launch in April, is expected to benefit around 4,000 small-scale aquaculture farmers and fishers by addressing key challenges such as post-harvest losses, increasing production, and optimizing sustainable fisheries.
Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya reaffirmed Japan’s strong partnership with the Philippines, highlighting the significant role of fisheries in economic growth, food security, and environmental sustainability.
“This project is a strategic investment in empowering fisherfolk, who play a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability of marine ecosystems,” Endo stated.
FAO Philippines representative Lionel Dabbadie emphasized that the project aligns with the region’s fisheries roadmap, which focuses on capacity-building and the adoption of science-based aquaculture practices. As part of FAO’s “Blue Transformation” strategy, the program will promote sustainable intensification in aquaculture, enhancing efficiency while reducing environmental impact.
Key project objectives include strengthening the capacity of fisher groups and local government, optimizing capture harvest potential, minimizing post-harvest losses, and improving biosecurity, fish health, and food safety standards. The initiative will also ensure compliance with halal regulations, supporting market expansion opportunities for fishery products.
With this investment in sustainable fisheries, the project aims to create lasting economic opportunities, strengthen trade, and enhance food security, contributing to long-term growth and prosperity.
