A significant project has been launched in Spain to evaluate the potential benefits of hydrogen fuel cells in warehouse operations. This initiative aims to create the country’s first hydrogen-powered logistics site, focusing on enhancing efficiency in forklift operations.
The project involves comparing the performance of hydrogen fuel cells with traditional lead-acid batteries at a logistics center located in the Barcelona municipality of Masquefa. This facility will serve as a model for future scaling of hydrogen fuel cell technology across a network of 46 warehouses throughout Spain.
Hydrogen fuel cells present numerous advantages over conventional batteries, including quicker recharge times, enhanced productivity with reduced downtime, and lower maintenance needs. Should the project prove successful, a comprehensive ecosystem for establishing a hydrogen-powered logistics site in Masquefa will be developed. This ecosystem will include hydrogen fuel cells, a large-scale electrolyser, and a dedicated hydrogen refueling station.
The initiative commenced in mid-August, with full implementation of the green hydrogen ecosystem expected to be achieved by the first half of 2026 through a phased execution approach.
