The e-commerce logistics index in China saw an increase in May, reaching 113.9 points, a 0.7 point rise from the previous month, as reported on Wednesday. This index serves as a key indicator of logistics operations within the e-commerce sector.
A notable growth was observed in the sector’s total business volume, with the sub-index climbing 2.1 points month-on-month to 129.8 points. Additionally, the business volume in rural areas showed positive movement, increasing by 1.8 points to 129.7 points.
The strong performance of China’s e-commerce logistics was fueled by a surge in tourism consumption during the May Day holiday. This period saw significant sales increases in categories such as sportswear, outdoor gear, and takeaway food.
Mid-year sales promotions on major e-commerce platforms further drove the demand for logistics services, indicating a vibrant market environment.
The sector is anticipated to sustain steady growth, supported by ongoing trade-in policies for durable consumer goods. China’s dominance as the world’s largest online retail market continues, with total online retail sales reaching 3.3 trillion yuan ($464.8 billion) in the first quarter of 2024, marking a 12.4 percent increase from the same period in 2023.
