During an Australia-Asean summit in Melbourne, the CEO of a Philippine energy firm emphasized the potential for collaboration between top lithium producer Australia and major nickel suppliers Indonesia and the Philippines in developing regional battery storage systems. Addressing delegates, he highlighted the concentration of risk in lithium battery production, with over 70% being produced in China alone.
With Australia leading in lithium production globally and Indonesia and the Philippines being significant nickel producers, there are opportunities to establish a regional supply chain to meet the growing demand for battery storage within the region, he noted. Additionally, he mentioned that opportunities for electric vehicle batteries could arise in Thailand, while Indonesia might offer more potential for large-scale battery production, particularly as solar power contributes to greening the country’s power supply.
